Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct health care profession. A doctor of naturopathic medicine (ND) is a general health practitioner trained as a specialist in natural medicine. A doctor of naturopathic medicine treats disease and restores health using therapies from the disciplines of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine, Chinese medicine and lifestyle counselling.
The naturopathic doctor has the degree, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND), which requires at least three years of pre-medical study from a university before acceptance into a four year year accredited naturopathic medical school. Naturopathic doctors are educated in conventional medical sciences in addition to various natural medical systems.
Naturopathic medicine is effective in treating most health problems, whether acute or chronic. Common conditions treated bay include allergies, sinusitis, menopause, PMS, headache, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and acne. Naturopathic medicine can help you lose weight and quit smoking as well. Virtually any condition can be treated.
A typical first visit with Dr. Maclean takes ninety minutes. The relationship begins with a thorough medical history and interview process designed to view all aspects of your life. Standard diagnotic procedures include a physical exam and naturopathic laboratory testing where appropriate. Time is devoted to discussing and explaining the principals of health as well as the specifics of your medical condition. You and Dr. MacLean will work together to establish a treatment and health promoting diet. “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food” is the foundation of Dr. MacLean’s practice. Dr. MacLean may also prescribe vitamin supplements, botanical or homeopathic medicines. Exercise and stress reduction methods will also be incorporated into the treatment plan. Depending on your condition, various naturopathic laboratory tests may be recommended. Examples of common tests are hair analysis, hormone analysis or food allergy panels.
Naturopathic Medicine is not covered by MSI, the Nova Scotia Provincial Health plan. However, many private insurance plans cover naturopathic care.
No referral is needed to make an appointment with a naturopathic doctor.
Until the Government of Nova Scotia regulates Naturopath Medicine, Theresa holds a license in Alberta. The Naturopathic Doctors Act was proclaimed on July 2, 2008. Those who provide services under the title “Naturopathic Doctor” must have the required education and credentials. This act is the first step towards regulation by the government.
