Theresa MacLean is happy to announce the addition of Somatic Experiencing to her naturopathic practice. Imagine allowing yourself to stay present and grounded during a stressful conversation or event. Imagine being able to think clearly and not react automatically solely based on emotion. Imagine being able to make the best choice towards resolving a stressful situation. Imagine healing past trauma. With a well regulated nervous system this is possible. Somatic Experiencing will help you achieve this goal.
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Peter Levine when observing in nature that animals have a way of recovering from a stressful event by completing the “fight, flight and freeze response”. Doctor Levine realized that humans have this same capacity too. Somatic Experiencing teaches the nervous system how to reconcile stressful memories. The stressful experience is renegotiated in small increments that are very tolerable to the client. This is achieved by moving between a “pleasant healing state” and a state with tolerable amounts of stressful memory. Great care is taken by the practitioner to do this process in small doses or “titrations.”. These titrations are expanded as the clients capacity to deactivate the stress response is achieved. This makes it possible to work more comfortably with many people with varying degrees of trauma. The goal is to renegotiate a stress response in a safe and supportive way. This will help resolve past experiences and to increase the clients resilience to future stress.
